How long of a connection and is it a regional flight?
If regional you should get the stroller fairly quick gate checking, by about the time the last people are exiting the aircraft.
Not sure about stroller's on non regional, I know gate checking your bag on a non regional you do not get back until final destination (at baggage claim).

wouldn't you want the stroller with you for the hour in ATL? If you check it to your final destination and you don't get on the flight, ramp will have to pull it off the plane and you will have to collect it at baggage. what airline are you flying on?

A stroller can be too much hassle for short connection unless your carry-ons are maxed out. How young is the child? w/6 people, can't someone deal just w/that child? (or are there other kids?)

Disney has strollers but not sure if they have them for 8 yr olds. I guess I don't know why you'd need a stroller for a child that old unless there's a disability issue, which I would certainly understand. I say just check it at the origination point and pick it up at MCO baggage. Seriously, how much "gear" do you need at the park?

If you only have an hour in ATL for your first possible connection, I would just check it to your final destination. The hassle factor of waiting for the stroller at the gate, rushing to the next gate (because it could be 15 or more minutes before you get off the plane and get that stroller) then gate checking it there just isn't worth it. It will be faster to just walk. If you are staying at the park, remember that Disney offers the option to collect your checked bags and bring them to your room. Take them up on it! I've done it and it was such a blessing not to have to lug around anything after the flight.
