A listing tells the airline exactly which flight/date you will stand by for. Depending on the system your airline uses to enable you to buy ZED fares, sometimes the listing must be created separately after ticket purchase (even though you chose the flight/date during ticket purchase). It is quite confusing and you must pay attention closely during these transactions. Without a listing, (and sometimes without you checking-in as well), your name will not be on the standby list at the airport. Most airlines want the standby process to be self-serve. They don't want agents time spent on non revs. So often these processes can't/won't be done by agents. Again, this depends on your airline and the airline you will ZED on. ZED fares are an excellent benefit and worth the time/complexity to use them. I used one this week when I didn't get on my own carrier.
