Since the mid 1980s Asheville North Carolina has been on my list of places to go. Finally last week I acheived my goal.
I found Asheville to be a lovely town tucked up into the hills. Resorts and golf courses as well as a huge artist and writer colony. Both F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe called Asheville home at one time. I had lunch on the back porch of the historic Grove Park Inn on a hill overlooking the city and I even felt I could produce litature. The Hotel has a fantastic Spa it pampering is what you desire.
I also visited the reason most travelers have made their way to Asheville for the last 100 years. The Biltmore home. It is the largest home in the US with 100s of rooms and acres of landscaped land. If you go get tickets from AAA or a discounter ahead of time. No discounts are given at the ticket office. I also suggest you take a picnic lunch. Food on the grounds was expensive and there are many delightful areas to spead a blanket and enjoy the sights as you are getting a bite to eat. The Biltmore was listed as one of the top 20 places to visit in the US by the National Geographic Traveler, and I have to agree.
