my hubby and I are going on a cruise, last minute don't ya know!, we will stop in Newfoundland, 3 ports in Greenland, Iceland,Shetland Is, norway, sweden, finland, St. petersburg Russia, Estonia, and ireland. I am scrambling to find information on some of the places, any idea of how cold it might be in Greenland in Aug, Newfoundland? Iceland? anyone been to the shetland IS? would appreciate any information, we are DL non revs..and thankfully this cruise is NY_NY

Greenland will be cool. Try checking out www.greenland.com and also www.visitshetland.com for more info. Note that you might need an English-Scots dictionary for the Shetlands !! Ha
I was in Iceland a couple of years ago in August. Much of the temperature is dependent upon whether or not it is a sunny day. It did get rather cool at night--bring a heavy sweater or jacket. Bring clothing you can layer. You won't need turtlenecks and thermals, but it certainly won't feel like August does at home.

Depending on how much time you have in Iceland take a trip inland to Geysir and Gullfoss to see really cool geysers and a beautiful waterfall. If you happen to be interested in polital history a brief stop at Parliament called the Althing is in order. There's not much to see but what it represents is significant. It was founded more that 1,000 years ago and is the oldest sitting congress/parliament in the world. Making Iceland the oldest democracy in the world. You should also visit Halgrim's Church and take the lift to the top for great views of the city and surrounding region.
While in St. Petersburg you MUST see the Church of the Spilt Blood. It's the most fabulous church I have seen anywhere in the world. It's real name is the Cathedral of the Resurrection but locally no one knows that name. There's a small entrance fee. It's located about half way inbetween the Hermitage and St. Alexander Nevsky Monastery (which is the final resting place of the great composer Peter Tschaikowsky) just a couple of blocks off Nevsky Prospect. Another stop should be the Hermitage, one of the world's great museums. A guided tour of the museum is probably best as the place is huge!

p.s. While in St. Petersburg visit the Fortress of Sts. Peter and Paul. This was the spot where the city was founded. While there walk thru the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul (you can't miss it, the spire on the church is enormous!) to visit the tombs of the czars from Peter the Great to Nicholas II.
