This is for Evan from Utah, or anyone else that has any suggestions. My husband and I are trying to plan a Ski trip the 2nd week of Feb. Been to Colorado several times and Jackson Hole as well. Would like to try Utah. We were thinking of renting a car in SLC and finding a reasonably priced place to stay where we could check out a few different ski areas. Is this a feasible plan? Any suggestions as to where to stay? It's just the 2 of us and we don't need cooking facilities.
    Thanks,
    Judy

    Judith,
I believe that you are with AA. If this is the case you could try checking with the AA Ski and Snowboard Club ( see www.naasf.com and follow the 'airline teams' link for contacts at AA ) as they may well have skied that area and could give you sone tips.

    Judith,

There are several hotels in the valley that will work for you. I cant think of any names right off the bat but I would plan on staying on 90th south and around I15. this area is close to the mountains and is easy access to several resorts. www.saltlakecity.com will help you and also there is a comfortsuites that is down in that area that has a good rate. I hope this helps.

Thanks Evan. I'll concentrate in that area. A lot of ski areas seem to have a lot of condos, which are a good deal if you are traveling with other people, (like the AA Ski club) but not such a bargain for just a couple. Besides I don't want to cook while I'm on vacation!

    Hi Judith,

A friend of mine, who's wife works for WN, gave me this site to see:
    www.parkcityinfo.com

It looks like you get a free lift ticket the day you fly into SLC. He's done it several times, and it is good for nonrev tickets too, just show your boarding pass, and get a free lift ticket.

    Hope this helps.

I have spend my whole life flying between ATL and SLC to take advantage of the dry powder out there. I think once you go you will be hooked. The only CO skiing that comes close in my opinion is Steamboat.

You have 2 major options for ski areas that you will clealy see on the web sites already mentioned. The first and closest to the city is the Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. These have some great slopes but can be pricy. Alta is located at the top of the canyon and does not allow snowboards. Its heavenly though if you are an avid skiier.

The next two are Brighton and Solitude and last time I checked you could buy a special pass that covered both. I like both but probably lean more to Solitude. Lowest in the canyon is Snowbird which is quite known internationally. Good by over priced.

If you want to know where all the locals go (or at least used to before it got so well known in the Olympics) is not so close to town. Its a place called SNOWBASIN and I don't think there is a better place in the country, but then I am biased. Before the Games you could ski the day for $33, but I think its in the upper 40's or even 50's now. You could ski for 2 weeks and still not cover the mountain. And its covered with high speed quads and gondolas.

The problem with Snowbasin is that it is north of the city near Ogden. The good thing is that Ogden can be a cheaper place to stay. You can rent skis downtown at Alpine Ski Shop cheap and then drive 20 mins to the slopes. Beautiful drive in the morning to.

Anyhoo...this is my input. Have a great trip and try to see Snowbasin if you can.

    Ps....
I don't really recommend Park City. Its a cool tourist ski town, but the slopes are lower elevation and really $$$$$$.
