I am looking to fly to Miami and perhaps make it a day trip. The problem is that we are going to be flying out of ORD which is about a 3 hour leg. We are particularly interested in South Beach area since we've never been there. Any suggestions, will it be feasible or we must stay for the whole weekend? What else is there besides South Beach that could be covered in a day. Rent a car or public transit? or perhaps taking cabs? Please advise....

Is a day trip worth it?

Depends on your enthusiasm, energy level, and sanity. I've been to a decent number of places, and the only nights I've spent were in GPT w/my brother, in MCO w/my best friend, and in LGA(in LGA, in the most uncomfortable chair) by myself. I've taken plenty of day trips.

I'd say go for it, the weather in ORD can't be much better, and probably is worse, than the weather in MDT, and I can't wait to go south. If you can warm up even for a day, do it.

I've never done a day trip to CVG or ATL, every trip I've taken requires a connection. 5 hours down, 5 hours on the ground, 5 hours back. A 3 hour nonstop really isn't that bad.

You could definitely get to MIA and back in a day, just depends how much energy you have.

My next trip planned is 2/18 to DEN to see my beloved Colorado Avalanche take on rival Detroit Red Wings. Technically a day trip? Not sure, hopefully leaving 6:30am, arriving 11am, taking red-eye back at 00:55am and back in MDT at 11:30am. Not out and back in same day, but no hotel either.

Have fun with whatever you decide to do.

Go for it and let us know how it goes. You definitely won't have time for anything besides South Beach if you want to do it in a day. There's enough just there to keep you busy for the whole weekend.

Rent a car drive to South Beach. IMO worth it.

We've done it from DFW and had a blast. We took the city bus from the airport to the beach and hung out all day. If I recall, it wasn't a terribly long bus ride (maybe, 30 minutes?)...and we had a great time.

This was before 9/11; so, we didn't stress about getting back to the airport more than 30 minutes before our flight. And, we had trouble getting on the direct flight and had tom come home through IAH...but, all in all, it was a great day and totally worth it.

    Good luck!
