why not try "booking" a tkt on travelnet with split dates? if it doesn't wokr, it doesn't--but it should work like the ATL/DKR/JNB or JFK/DKR/CPT (which BTW, the CPT flights are being cut)
I'll take a look later and see what it says--my friends are in Recife, too., but the visa is an issue
