This quiz is about historic airlines. Since the term "historic" is subject to personal opinion, I asked a few people to help with questions. Unfortunately this simple request was commmmpletely misinterpreted as some sort of comment about "old age", and a whole discussion about the Mojave Desert, Howard Hughes and the proper way to open a CD followed. Therefore this quiz is all over the place, but chocked full of useful information especially if you ever find yourself on Jeopardy.

    <UL TYPE=SQUARE>

    1. This airline flew the first commercial jet airliner (De Havilland Comet) and operated the first jet fleet.

    2. Who was the first airline to offer in-flight movies? A roundabout hint- this question caused a big discusssion about the movie "the Aviator", and the casting of Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes.

    3. Howard Hughes is associated with which airline?

    4. This airline revolutionized aircraft exterior and interior with its "End of the Plain Plane" campaign in 1965. It also was the first airline to commission a fashion designer Emilio Pucci to design its f/a's uniform, also in 1965.

    5. This airline said, "We have to earn our wings everyday".

    6. The first airline to operate the Boeing 747 in regular scheduled service, the first to operate round-the-world service with the Boeing 747 and the first airline to introduce a new separate class of service for business and full-fare economy pax. A very good hint--Clipper Class

    7. What airline was known as "The top banana in the West".

    8. What airline won the west with a smile- "Catch our smile".

    Bonus
True or false- There has always been an eskimo on the tail of the Alaska Airlines plane? [/list]
    Good luck
(BTW, you can ask for hints. )

    Bonus
True or false- There has always been an eskimo on the tail of the Alaska Airlines plane?

No, there have been several things on the Alaska tail. In fact, at one time there were 4 different pictures on AS tails. The public found it too confusing and made it impossible to immediately recognize and AS plane so we did a survey of our passengers and the eskimo won. In the 80's there was some talk about removing the eskimo once we started flying more to the lower 48 but the people in the state of Alaska were so upset they wrote to their congressmen to see if legislation could be passed to prevent it! Needless to say, Alaska took their comments to heart and promised to keep the eskimo on the tail as long as we are in business.

Donna you scored 6 out of 8.
Actually in rereading the quiz I see one question needed to be a bit more specific. So while your answer wasn't the one I had in mind, it never the less was correct.
Trust me, there'll definitely be some repercussions in the 'research department' over that slip-up.
You aced the bonus question, surprise surprise, MS Alaska Air!

    The quiz is still open.
Anyone care to guess where Donna has taxied to the wrong gate???

Donna you have question #1 correct.
It's question #6 you have wrong; BA and 'Clipper Class' are not a good fit. Any more help requires chocolate-chip cookie inducement.

Actually Question 6 is incorrect. Qantas Airways had the world's first Business Class, although PA always refuted it and never recognised it. Nevertheless, it's true and the QF Business Class (wasn't called Business Class) product was in operation many months before PA.
