SAN JOSE -- At a time of heightened scrutiny of drivers for ride-booking operations, San Jose police said Tuesday they are seeking an Uber driver for allegedly assaulting a Mineta San Jose International Airport official who flagged him down near the airport's car rental center for speeding.
The fight at San Jose's airport happened just a few days before an Uber driver in Michigan reportedly killed six people and injured two more in a weekend shooting rampage.
The reported San Jose airport attack happened Thursday after an airport official, whom police would not identify, followed an Uber driver to the car rental facility after he spotted him speeding around the airport's ground transportation pickup area. Both vehicles pulled over and the airport employee confronted the Uber driver and began taking pictures of the driver and his car, according to police Sgt. Enrique Garcia.
That's when the driver jumped out of his car and attacked the airport employee, Garcia said.
"The suspect exited his car, approached the victim, grabbed his shirt, yelled at him and pushed him," Garcia said. "The suspect's fare arrived, got in the suspect's car and the suspect drove away with the fare."
Police are looking for the Uber driver, who is described as a white male in his 40s with dark hair, about 5 feet 10 inches and weighing 175 pounds.
