Cathay Pacific ZED question

I am purchasing a ZED to get from HKG to SFO/LAX. The zones are different, SFO is a Zone 8 and LAX is a Zone 9
But, the ZED ticket cost is the same, can I use 1 ZED for both options or do I need to get two ZEDs.

I checked with our travel center and they did not know.

It;s point to point so you need one for Lax and one for SFO

This makes it sound that if the destination is in the same zone you do not need to get a different zed

Employee must refund ZED ticket and purchase a new ZED ticket if the following changes occur:

Change to origination and/or destination points are outside of the current ZED– Zone fare they are holding.

Change of itinerary now includes a connection point or change in connection point.

The question I had was SFO and LAX are in different zones but the two zones cost the same. But, the Zone fare is the same.
I will try and call Cathay Pacific tomorrow and also ask the ticket counter when I purchase the ZED.

All I can tell is my notes say--point to point, not zone to zone but what's the question? If one zed is SFO (diff point and diff zone) why expect to interchange an LAX if they are not equal? I sure wouldn't second guess an agent at CAthay who may of may not agree with your interpretation.

ZED fares are interchangable but you cannot change up.

Example...I had an AZ ZED for FCO-ORD.
The flight canceled.
I used it for AA FCO-JFK.
I could not have used it for AZ FCO-LAX but I could use it for equal or less in zone and price.

Even if they could be interchangeable, you don't want to encounter the gate agent that doesn't fully know how ZEDs work, especially if there is a change in zones. I would buy 2 of them, just in case, and refund whatever you do not use.

I ended up purchasing both ZED's as backups, hopefully I will not need them.

I had this exact issue on an FOC ticket once and it took a lot of arguing as being an FOC ticket zones were irrelevant.

Based on experience, even though it costs the same they will accept the further away zone for both sectors, but never the shorter zone for the longer sector

So, do most airlines take a higher zone for a lower zone flight? Do you get refunded or just eat the cost? I know it does not really matter as you will get the unused zeds refunded just hate being sent a bill and wait for refund.
