Default ZED ticket - EWR to MAA on Lufthansa

    Hello,

I booked a ZED ticket from EWR - FRA - MAA as single ticket on Nov 14th. Now I have few questions with respect to travel.

    1. How many bags can i check in from EWR? Is it two or one?
    2. Will it be check in through to MAA? or Do I need recheck in at FRA?
    3. I hold valid U.S visa and Do I need to get a Schengen transit visa for travel?

Also if anyone can provide the seat availability in business and economy from EWR to BOM & EWR to DEL in United Airlines, then it would be very helpful.

    Thanks in advance

ZEDs require one free checked bag, but LH may allow a second, especially if they do for revenue passengers. I'd take a look at the policy for paying customers and expect that (but if you can do one bag, I would).

If you're staying on the same airline, and on a single ticket as you say, they'll probably be able to do it all the way through. Kind of depends on the airline, but most don't have a problem with accepting transfers.

What's your nationality? I can check TIMATIC when I'm at work to see what exact requirements are. You say you have a valid US visa, are you a US resident, even if a citizen of another country?

UA has 10/56 available seats in C/Y to DEL that day, 14/52 to BOM. I've actually been watching those loads religiously for a friend/forum member the day before. Those have maybe a dozen more seats per flight, but I'm giving him decent odds with the numbers I've been seeing. Still, check again a few days prior.

    Hi and welcome to non-rev

    1) India - USA normally allowed 2 bags @ 23kg each if booked/listed on one itinerary. If separate then the one piece rule applies. Check your e-ticket receipt to see the exact allowance

    2) Your bags can be checked through to MAA even if on a standby ticket. Once you're accepted on the EWR-FRA leg they can issue the standby boardingpass for your connecting flight. However often at the gate at acceptance there isn't enough time or just unwilling. You can also obtain the MAA boarding pass at the transfer desk airside at FRA

    3) You don't mention what type of visa you hold. The transit without visa (TWOV) rule applies to those holding a residence-type visa or altenatively a green card for the USA. Check the TIMATIC website for the rules. Perhaps to be on the safe side, time and resources permitting, still get a visa. Murphy's law etc....you don't want to be stuck in no man's land intransit

Thanks frapos & spongbue for your response. I am an Indian citizen having US work (H1) visa. If LH does thru check in , then I don't need to exit immigraation/customs for bag re-check in. I will request you (spongebue) 3 days before my journey for availablity.

Sounds good! I'll try to check TIMATIC soon in the meantime. I've got a coworker in a similar situation. Well, he has a green card, but all they care about is residency.
