I would still contact Consulate to be certain.
I always print our travelnet itinerary, keep copy of company letter asking for courtesy extended to employees, copy of spouse ID (as employee) and retain seat request/boarding card that says nonrev (NRSA) as I enter.
I had similar issue with getting a visa once--they required RT ticket too. After I called them, I took all those things plus our prepaid hotel info, etc to the embassy and they accepted my airline spouse status [as standby] for return travel, and gave me the visa. I was able to do the same on behalf of my husband, by pre-arrangement (he was overseas).
Don't presume anything unless you're willing to risk an immediate turnaround flight and/or fines, penalties.
