    Question Origin of the WN designation ????

    The WN designation for Southwest, anyone know the history?
    Inquiring minds want to know.

    When I worked there, the inside info was that WN stood for We're Nuts...

    I guess they had wanted SW but it was already spoken for by Air Namibia, so Herb said give me anything.....We're Nuts and then came the WN code.

    The company doesn't have an "official" reason why it was chosen. There's multiple possible reasons, i.e. We're Nuts, random letter generation, or my favorite, Wiskey Napkin since that's where the idea of SWA was first born (Herb and Rollin King drew out the "Texas Triangle" of DAL-HOU-SAT-DAL as the routes they wanted to run).
