Rules of eligibility have changed since I joined them back in 1987 in Diego Garcia. Used to be only for NAVY and USMC officers plus DOD employees and contractors assigned to military installations. Now its open to all branches of active military and reserves.
Eligibility Checklist
Navy Federal's field of membership is determined by the National Credit Union Administration.
If you fall under any of these categories, you're eligible to join:
All Department of Defense (DoD) uniformed personnel—Army, Marine Corps, Navy and
Air Force retirees and annuitants
All Department of Defense Reservists—Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force retirees
and annuitants
All Army and Air National Guard Personnel—civilian employees, retirees and annuitants
All DoD Officer Candidate programs—Midshipmen and cadets at the United States Naval Academy,
United States Military Academy, United States Air Force Academy, United States Coast Guard Academy
and the United States Merchant Marine Academy; Other Officer Programs*
U.S. Government employees assigned to DoD installations (including Coast Guard)
All DoD civilian employees—including retirees and annuitants
DoD contractors assigned to U.S. Government installations
(This was my qualifier as I was in Diego Garcia with the MPS program in the late 1980's)
Family Members—including grandparents, parents, spouses, siblings, grandchildren, children (including adopted and stepchildren) and household members
Once your family members have joined, they can extend the membership opportunity to their family members, too.
Still not sure if you are eligible? Use our Membership Eligibility Wizard or call us at 1-888-842-6328.
Ok, if this above sounds like it could be for you but DO NOT qualify, fear not. There is another outstanding credit union that is more geared for military and government employees, and if you belong to certain associations. Though I don't place them above my credit union, I understand they are quite outstanding and some actually favor PENTAGON FEDERAL CREDIT UNION. Have I got a secret for you. ANYBODY can join. There is a loophole. They even give it to you on the eligibility page. There are aproximately 9 ways to join. There is even a list of associations and government entities you work for that are listed. But here is where your loop hole comes in. Go to https://www.penfed.org/ and on the top, click HOW TO JOIN. Then you get a page with all the listings. The last two steps, 8,9 shows two associations that you can join for a one time fee, like 15 bucks, and being a member of that association gets you membership in the Pentagon Fed CU.
If you do not fall within our regular field of membership, you can join the National Military Family Association in order to become a member with Pentagon Federal Credit Union.
If you do not fall within our regular field of membership, you can join the Voices for America's Troops in order to become a member with Pentagon Federal Credit Union as membership is open to anyone.
- Low, one-time only $20 fee (fee is non-refundable tax deductible donation)
- Membership is open to anyone
- National Military Family Association is the leading non-profit advocacy organization for military families
- You do not have to retain National Military Family Association membership to stay a member with Pentagon Federal Credit Union
This may sound like alot of hassle just to join a credit union, however, I believe these credit unions kick the living you know what out of most banks, plus its quite a priveledge to belong to them. Their home owners and auto insurance, is provided via GEICO at a much discounted PENFED or NAVFED membership rates. Their products and services are very commendable. I joined them around ten years ago, via association through NAUS but now they seem to take all veterans where they weren't before that I know of.If you prefer a brick and mortar bank, these banks are not in all cities towns and regions. They are reduced to being mostly on military instillations, or around them. They do have places you can go with your atm card and not be charged fees. Everything can be done online with them. They don't nickel and dime you like regular banks do. No fees for having less than 300 dollars in checking ect....check out their easy to follow web site and see for yourself.
- Low, one-time only $15 fee (non-refunable membership fee)
- Voices for America’s Troops advocates for a strong national defense, including sustaining and improving quality of life programs for America’s troops, their families and survivors.

29Palms...Many thanks for using "paragraphs"...some folks still don't know about them....
Ok, as mentioned above somewhere, definately expand your travel experiences. Go to USAA web site. They have an outstanding travel and cruise area. You must register to use this. Membership is for anyone, not just military. I'll say it again. The only thing you must have to join the auto/homeowners insurance part of usaa is a military connection.
So you can use USAA travel and cruise section. Register online, they'll give you a membership number. I don't know if you must open up a bank account or buy any of their products. There is also a toll free number listed. I was checking it out last night and its real good. I was impressed on how you can click on to a city and have a listing of hotels with membership prices. Bounce these membership prices along with your airline discounts and see which is cheapest. www.usaa.com
we really appreciate the service and prices at USAA. I like finding travel discounts on their website, too.
I agree that some interline deals are not really the best

Ok, glad to see someone making use of something aside interline airline travel sites to expand their travel options. I wonder if USAA actually uses government rates. To me, government rates means government employees or military on active/reserve duty. I had a Naus membership card once for a rental car discount, and they gave me government rate. Don't know if that was the best rate available, Still like the wife's employee rate at her hotel. Nothing beats that. Check these guys out too.
