Default Unaccompanied spouse traveling on a Zed fare

I'm the spouse of a UA flight attendant and I try to take advantage of her benefits whenever I can. I've tagged along with her when she's been working several times and only on a few occasions have I not been able to get on one of her flights. I've gotten pretty good at finding my own way home when we misconnect, but it's always been on United flights.

I just found FlyZed.com. I realize that their method of load status may be somewhat inaccurate but it looks like a wonderful tool if I'm not able to get home on United.

Can anyone tell me if the procedures for obtaining a zed fare for an unaccompanied spouse is any different from that of the employee? I've flown a couple times on a zed fare but it's always been with her and she's always made the arrangements.

Welcome aboard WS. There’s an excellent ZED article on our homepage, plus our ZED correspondent (AAZED) is always happy to answer ZED questions - oh yeah, she's quirky like that.

    Hi WS -

The procedures for obtaining a ZED ticket are up to each employing airline. For some, like AA, the employee and anyone else eligible for ZED tickets, can walk up to any AA ticket office to request a ZED. At other airlines there are centralized offices that manage this and usually require that the employee submit a request on behalf of himself and anyone of his dependents that wishes to travel. I'm not sure at all what UA's procedures are.

As for accompanied vs. not accompanied status, the ZED agreement has no restriction on travel by a spouse or dependent child traveling with out the employee. UnlessUA has agreed to a restriction on a bilateral basis you should be able to travel without your spouse on any of the airlines with which UA has a ZED agreement.

Hope this helps and happy traveling!
