CLE Airport Concourse D has officially closed down. Concessions at the concourse are no longer operating as of Thursday. United Airlines announced in February it was pulling its hub at Concourse D because it says it had been unprofitable for the last decade. The closure includes cutting daily flights from about 200 to around 70, along with about 500 jobs. The airline has consolidated its remaining flights at Hopkins to Concourse C.
Meanwhile, UA later this year will begin subleasing four gates it controls at the crowded Los Angeles International Airport to AA. United and American have been jockeying for the top market share position at this highly fragmented but strategically important airport. By giving up valuable gate space at LAX, United is all but throwing in the towel.
