United Airlines will lay off 115 employees at MIA and 66 at JAX in May.
The workers were first notified in January, said Luke Punzenberger, a spokesperson for the Chicago-based airline. Some of the employees are able to be transferred to other positions within the company if they are eligible, he added. The jobs will officially be eliminated May 17-30.
"These are difficult decisions but we need to make sure our costs are competitive," Punzenberger said. The cuts also have to do with union negotiations on wages.
In addition, approximately 66 airport operations positions — both below wing, such as baggage handlers and ramp workers, and above wing, such as customer service representatives — will be laid off from JAX.
