Does anyone know what the limit is to carry wine into South Africa? I have found that you can carry 2 bottles duty free, but how do you find out what it would cost to take a case? If anyone
knows, I'd appreciate hearing from you! Thanks.

Yes, I know that South Africa has great wine...my family lives near Stellenbosch, but Washington State also has good wine and we like to trade

    Sounds good to me!

(I am a moderator on another internet travel forum for young folks who want to backpack Europe, and they're *always* asking about sending home wine and beer that can probably be purchased in the States--hope you weren't insulted!)

    Hi Shona,
Your official limit is 2 litres per person of wine or spirits into SA.
3 X 750ml regular size bottles per person would be close enough.
As MK says the wine (and spirits) in SA are so cheap and of such good quality that it is rare that anyone actually wants to bring it in rather than buying there.
It is far more expensive in duty free anywhere versus normal retail in SA, so it is not something customs is usually looking for.
Have never had any sort of problem with customs there in 6 recent visits and they don't seem to bother tourists at all.
    Good luck.

No...you didn't insult me at all...you may have, had you said something negative about Wa. state
wines. I actually appreciate that you took the time to read my post!

    Thanks...I was an exchange student
in South Africa in 1985 but have not
been back since! My host sister and
I have met in England but this is
my first trip back to CPT. Between
my husband and I, we can carry 6
bottles? That should be enough to
entice them to make a trip to the states!
    I appreciate the input!

6 recent trips? Business or pleasure?
    It's a beautiful country, hey?

    Hi Shona,
Yes, it's a beautiful country but very large. There are too many places to see and never enough time.
CPT and the region is still the best though, and the troubles in other areas don't seem to have reached there to the same extent - yet.

6 bottles should be enough to convince your friends that WA wines can more than hold their own and I'm sure you will have no trouble at all with customs.

4 trips were short biz ones to JNB only but the other 2 were long vacation trips between JNB & CPT by road via lots of interesting areas and another one direct to CPT and Paarl area for several wine tasting days. Can't wait to get back.
    Have a good trip.
    Peter

    Shona,

I just returned from a weekend trip to Seattle and my friend and I sampled a couple of different Washington wines which were excellent! I wish I could remember the names, but they were so good, we drank waaay too much!

    Told ya.

If you drive from Yakima to the Tri-Cities,
you can visit many, many wineries with tasting
rooms...best to have a designated driver!
