Anyone know of minimum connecting times in jnb, specifically for nonrevs. And what's the procedure for stand by check in in jnb with SAA. I may have just a 45 minute connection time, international to international (its an onward flight to mru) can I proceeed directly to the gate or a transfer desk airside. If I don't get on or miss the SAA flight there's always an MK a couple hours later, but my partner can't travel MK and it will always be nicer to get on the first available. Comments and/or suggestions are all welcome.

    Happy Travels

    Hey frapos,

Not sure if this can help, I have never done airside transfer int/int at JNB. I have had plenty of nonrev experience at that airport and can say that unless they offer an airside transfer (unusual if you are changing airlines usually) you will need at least every minute of that 45min to clear immigration and collect bags - hideously long queues and usually only 2 customs agents checking declarations. Landside also takes about 20 minutes after check in to go through immigration outbound.

When you eventually do get upstairs to check in, SAA is on the far right of the terminal and usually plentifully staffed.. unlike their customer airlines. It is small, cramped and confusing up there so if need be, push through or be forceful - it's no place to be quiet and meek. They will check the PIL before you can get to check-in and your passport, explain you are standby staff and they will let you through as your name obviously won't be on the confirmed pax list. SAA do prefer you to list and usually any check in agent can help you, but they will probably call a supervisor before onloading you.

More than this, I can't help much.. all the best! If you have any other queries drop me a note.

    Cheers,
    Ant
