OK crazy--here's the scoop on our recent trip DL ATL/JNB this June/July-- It's via DKR (Senegal--better have yellow fever cert if you get "removed" and have to overnight--they might ck) and it's a beast. 9+hrs per leg + ground security time 2-3 hrs--we got biz both ways, BUT low seniority employee parent was yanked halfway back to ATL. He had good knowledge and experince there, so he was ok--but NR's can be stuck for days. Fees are high ($80 just for DKR to add to fare for airport infrastructure--they NEED it!!))
The flights were packed and that was off-season somewhat since it was their winter. Service was excellent tho!!
