Our kids are in the USAF on Kadena. We want to visit them. Has any one non-reved to Japan? If so could you please give us some pointers?!

North West goes to NRT Japan from Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, also to NAGOYA. Continental goes to NRT (NARITA Tokyo)daily from HOUSTON. I've flown to Japan many times. THAT'S the main hub to get to the Asian destinations. Take something to NRT and then take a local airline to OKINAWA like JAL or ANA. That's what I'd do. By the way, KADENA is a nice place. I love OKINAWA. That's a nice Air Force base, be sure to have the BIGGEST HAMBURGERS IN THE PACIFIC at the AIRMENS CLUB. Take a walk outside the gate to BC street, to the NY club. Nice place if its still around. GO VISIT NAHA too. I was there back in 1989, 1994, 1995.

Thanks for the advice. What are the chances of getting bumped at NRT? My daughter in law suggested I fly to Hawaii and try to Space A from there (we are retired military). I guess my greatest concern is getting bumped in a foreign country and having trouble reaching Kadena.
I see your concern and many people feel that way about getting bumped in a foreign country. I don't know what your rank seniority being retired military is therefore, I cannot base what your chances of making it to Okinawa via Hawaii would be through military channels. Do you have AIRLINE non rev priveledges? If you have both, that's an ace in the hole definately. I think your chances of being bumped in NRT are slim. Okinawa is in JAPAN and I am sure there are various flights to Okinawa out of NRT. I would just call JAL or ANA and ask how their flights look for a non rev on that particular day. But if you have retired priveledges, and you have the time, Hawaii sounds good especially if you can utilize the base BAQ quarters for; what is it now? 10 bucks per night? You can probably connect via GUAM if you have to via ANDERSON AFB, utilize BAQ, BOQ. (That's a nice terminal.) You got it made.

i came across some correspondence with you back in may 07. i can't figure out how to get from NRT to OKA on an airline that Southwest has agreements with. When i go to Japan air (JT) it shows that they fly out of HND which is a ways from NRT.
How about China Air or United? How did you fly over when you went?
United doesn't fly to Okinawa. We fly to NRT and KIX and NGO. From NRT and KIX we utilize NH (All Nippon) to get to OKA. Going Space-A on MAC flights in/out of Hawaii can be tough at times (I'm also in the military, living in Hawaii).
thanks for the info. I called UA non-rev line today and got the same info about UA not flying into OKA. We can fly China Air from SEA to OKA on the trip into Japan but CI does not fly out of OKA. Weird. Since Southwest does not have pass agreements with NR (All Nippon) I can't find a way to get from OKA back to the states. I even tried going thru HNL but it appears that none of the carriers we have agreements with will fly out of OKA to anywhere!
So I then tried buying a one way back from OKA but the price is awful for a one way.
Do you have any idea how difficult it would be to Space A from Kadena to Hickman? We have a codeshare with ATA and we can fly from HNL back to the states.
This is our first time to non rev outside the states and I am finding it to be very complicated. Maybe it's just because flying into OKA isn't easy. Seems that All Nippon has the corner on those flights!
Any more advice would be most helpful!
We leave Idaho on the eve of Jan 23 to go to SEA where we will try to catch Space A to Kadena. If that doesn't work, I have passes on CI. If that doesn't work, we come back home!
I don't have any options for coming back to the USA from OKA on Feb. 2. If Space A from Kadena doesn't work, we are SO stuck there!
Can you fly Japan Airlines (JAL)? I think that they would be your best bet. JAL flies from HND to OKA. If you have to fly into Narita then I would check the price of a train ticket to HND. Also If you fly through HNL like you said you might, JAL flies to HND thereby negating the train. Their website is jal.com. And if you search the routing on their website you will get other options as well.
I would do some more research. Also you can go to airlineroutemaps.com which will give you a better idea of who flies where. Also remember that as a nonrev we often take two steps backward to take one forward.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
We found some good information on Yokota AFB website. If we fly to NRT, we could stay at Yokota and fly space A on into Kadena when the next military flight leaves. (we are retired Air Force). But that only happens once a week.
Called the pass bureau for SWAirlines today about passes on NWAirlines from SEA to NRT. Good price but the agent says most times the flights go and come full since NRT is their hub for that part of the world.
Every part of the plan has a glitch! So we think we'll wait till next year to go when we should have 2 weeks of vacation to devote to this adventure. We have learned so much about flying Space A and non-reving internationally. I am building a file so that next January we will have much of the research done.
Any additional information we can collect would be helpful!
Thanks so much for your input
