I'd have to agree, Surfers Paradise is VERY touristy and the beach isn't really even that good anymore. If you haven't booked a hotel yet, i'd seriously be considering some other places.

If i were to recommend anywhere, it would be Cairns/The Great Barrier Reef, or Magnetic Island (off Townsville by short ferry) is VERY worth visiting. Well that's my 10 cents...
