This is my first experience using a friend's buddy pass.

The wife and I live in BKK, and we want to get back to the US on Dec 19 for Christmas. We were offered DL buddy passes. However, apparently we can only start them in NRT, since BKK-NRT still has a NW flight number.

I was hoping to use our UA miles to get us to NRT, but that only gives us about a 60-min. connection. Is that enough time to get the whole buddy pass thing done? Is there even a chance for checked bags? (Can UA check through if we're not on the flight yet..?)

Just wondering what I need to be preparing for.

    Thx.

I would allow at least 2 hours (pref 3). we have used KE miles to add to our DL emp ATL/NRT legs and had enough time to complete the connection comfortably.
the airport complex is HUGE--we had the convenience of partner KE in same terminal
I don't think UA can check your bags thru
give yourself a day and stay over nearby (Radissson is way in town but free shuttle) Plenty of well-priced hotels close to NRT, too.
we've done the BKK and DPS trips this way (twice going thru and staying in Incheon AirportTown--does DL still operate ICN??)

we arrived DL counter--they gave us seat request card and had us return at set time for seat assignments, then go thru passport control then security then to the gates. don't plan on shopping either

Dec 19 - you might want to check for Embargos on Buddy Passes over the holidays - they were announced yesterday for certain dates!

    CARPE TRIPPEM -

Far Better to have listed and lost, than to have never have listed at all.

    Good catch, Jumper--19, 24 and 27 are no-go for buddy passes plus no travel Jan 2, 3, 4, 2010.

My Buddy Pass itin was already issued a few weeks ago for the dates you mentioned. Does this mean I would show up and they would just not honor it?

sorry to say our memo says all buddy pass itineraries with embargoed dates need to be reissued.
aside from being denied at check-in, your employee could be penalized

UA will only through check your bags if your itinerary is all on one ticket.
Two seperate tickets = 2 seperate transactions for the purpose of undercutting a through fare or combining a published/nett or combination of both.
Sorry, but employee tickets and a mix of revenue fall into the same bracket = 2 seperate tickets
