They will only clear you the last 30 minutes (in Departures area, before you go thru security), so we decided to carry on, that way if we make it, our bags will also.

We were trying to get to Chiang Mai and didn't make it, but it sounds like your route might be better (i.e. there were 20 standbys in front of us, but perhaps there won't be that many Thai employees trying to get to/from Frankfurt).

I found that the "smiley faces" on www.flyzed.com were not very accurate, and often different than the "smiley faces" on myIDtravel, so check that website for numbers.

Also, as was said, check on the festivals! We didn't realize how big Chinese New Year was here, so it's very busy.
