I know that NW did that when I worked for them in Summer 2008. Not the self-scanning, but the subway-style boarding. Well, they boarded first class and elites first, but after that it was first-come first-on. Honestly, it didn't work too badly. Actually, in Europe it was also a free for all like that, and it was the same thing there. You don't even notice until you look back.
