Does anyone know why so many flights have 30+ HKs for weeks at a time? It seems kind of crazy to me and it sure makes it hard to plan a trip.

Yeah, so many HK's on flights is a headache! The reason why there are so many HK's depends on how full the flight is and what seats are blocked for gate agent use only. For example, on a CR9 (76 seater) there are only 8 seats that are blocked for gate agents to use (4 seats in the bulkhead and 4 seats in the last row), whereas on a MD88 there are usually at least 15+ seats blocked for us gate agents to use only. Also, when passengers check in at home and there are no general seats left (i.e. Middle seats in the forward part of the cabin or seats towards the rear of the plane, the system will automatically place them on the HK list upon check-in because all aisle and window seats towards the front of the cabin are reserved for "Priority" passengers only (i.e. Medallions). I have opened a flight up on numerous occasions and have had 20 HK's with plenty of seats to choose from because the seats that were open were all towards the front and window or aisle seats. Hope this helps to answer why some flights are so clogged with HK's.

So they are not all "mishandled", more of an issue with with the way the computer systems "talk" to one another?
