Delta was planning on not allowing buddy passes to ride in J unless there was another pass rider (not only the employee) with them. However, that was postponed and still hasn't been implemented.

On the other hand, the chance of an S2 getting J LAX-SYD is vanishingly small. S4, not a chance. It's not unlikely you'll have to wait several days even to get a seat.
