If anyone is interested in a nice quiet slow paced vacation in England, try canal barging. We just returned from a week of self crewed barging on the canals in Staffordshire. The boat we rented slept six, and with only two couples we had plenty of room and privacy. You can learn all you need to know to operate the boats (and canal locks) in the couple hours needed to check in and get underway. We rented our boat from a timeshare outfit, but there are other rental options. If anyone wants additional information or pictures just give me a shout. Tesek

Ahoy Captain,
I'm curious about your barge vacation.
You mentioned you were "self crewed" and learned what you needed to know in a couple of hours. Exactly how alone were you, radio, telephone, self-help barge video?
What about shore excursions? Were you able to stop wherever and do some sightseeing, or were all stops predetermined? Finally, and you know I had to ask, what about sleeping and seasickness, or did the doctor have the Absolut prescription?

Migflanker, yes to all the above. There was a cell phone (we didn't use it once), there was an instructional video on board (didn't watch it), we could stop where ever and when ever we wanted (and the charts provided all the info we needed on cultural, historical, shopping, dining within walking or biking distance of the canals). The barges were very steady and calm (good sleeping), and we generally stopped well away from highways and train lines, so it was generally pretty quiet at night. I am ready to go back, but my wife is not retired yet. Tesek
