...but I plan to go for New Year's Eve with the man of my dreams (yes--my husband!!)
We arrive NYE and have NYD to play--guess lot of stuff may be closed? Anyway, if we have to do the stroll only (which is fine, we love to walk) who can recommend where, what, etc?
We stay Hilton so I guess we have to get to city center.
    Tips appreciated...hahahaha

Right at the top I have to say that all info is from my sister-in-law who hated ( oh yeah that's the word she used) Paris, but loved Lyon.

Best views - Fourviere Cathedral, it's on a hill overlooks the city -- Loved it
Best place to wander around, Vieux Lyon (old town)
    Best meal, Lyon salad
Fun place - peniches, nights clubs that started out as boats.

Even though I do not prefer Paris, I have always been interested in Lyon as "Paris of the South" without the Paris factor...
    Thanks for the tips.

    Trip report!!

Even at it's greyest, Lyon is lovely. LYS is way east of city and took half hour on crew bus. Medieval city--apparently has now eclipsed Marseilles as second largest city in France but you'd never realize it.
Lots of hills with 2 rivers, Rhone and Soane flowing thru. The old city is great--funiculars to the hills like Fourviere--that basilica is one of the prettiest I have EVER seen in Europe. Recently cleaned/restored, the mosaics look new and the colour of BLEU is slightly aqua and just gorjus! The outside walls are nearly alabaster! A must-see!
You can get single transport tickets for 1.60E but makes more sense to get full day for 4.40E or if you're only doing the nightlife it's 2.20 after 7pm--all you can ride--funiculars, trams, buses included. There are really cute little groceries around town--wine, produce etc for picnic needs--park or room! Also have huge Monoprix w/lower level food store. Great selection but killer queues!
Old city has really cool "walkways" called traboules between little streets--with no so "secret" corridors and courtyards--you can go thru or just see the interesting towers/stairs etc where little apts are squeezed in up and down. Fascinating!
Food is varied and pretty pricey--cheaper eats can be had but it's quite the gastronomic city.
The station manager at Delta is one of the most efficient, friendliest, sharpest, most professionalI have ever met while nonreving (and not to mention that he's drop dead handsome!!) He really took very good care to inform us of the procedures etc and have us wait until he or his staff assigned seats.
We had a tiny little mishap when we we waiting for departure--a ground crew member stuck a ladder into the skin and pierced it and the pressure whatever so after looking for a repair, they canceled the flight and we got to spend an extra night in Lyon!!
I got a regional map of the Rhone/Alps area and it seems to be a very good choice for exploring the wineries and small towns nearby, too!
Highly recommended city to visit! Nice people everywhere we went --really NICE!!

Nice report 76er. In referance to your comment about...."a ground crew member stuck a ladder into the skin and pierced it". That's three days off without pay here for that kind of mishap.

Excellent report M767. Wondering did you get to visit any wineries or any of the Michelin rated resturants? My sister-in-law still comments on the great cheeeeeeeese.
