I was there last OCT, it was super cool and a great experience... transportation is an issue. Rental cars=too expensive for a ramper. I would consider A "circle tour" of the Island. They take you around the Ring Road all around Iceland for I think 3 days. That way transport is included... Hostels are a good way to go also...
