there is a really great article on Iceland in Budget Travel Magazine (maybe 2?) from past year(s)
All I know is August is peak month and the geysers/steam baths look incredible
I understand it's very very expensive to eat/drink and they have serious financial issues that effect prices (socio-economic stuff)
If you go, you MUST share, please!! (demand, request, ask politely...)

You might also want to check out Randy's Iceland article, in the Forum's articles section; lots of great info and there's pictures too.

Was there 10 years ago in August and it was pretty cold actually. Don't know if that's normal or not. Must see Blue Lagoon and tour with waterfall, etc. It is supposed to be much cheaper now that their economy collapsed. Great deals on hotels.
I have been to Iceland over 50 times, and I'll be glad to answer any questions.
With service starting in a few days from SEA, I'm really excited about getting back there.
A few good links to check out are the Trip Advisor forum:

I'll be glad to help in any way. Iceland is a fantastic place. You have got to see it.

"cheaper"
I was there last OCT, it was super cool and a great experience... transportation is an issue. Rental cars=too expensive for a ramper. I would consider A "circle tour" of the Island. They take you around the Ring Road all around Iceland for I think 3 days. That way transport is included... Hostels are a good way to go also...

Thanks for all the info people! Been very slack on my reading of the forum lately

Iceland? Never been there. Talked to some servicemen that had been stationed there. They have a Navy installation there at KEFLAVIK. Boring duty I hear and Iceland is very expensive. Tour of duty is usually for one year for a service member. I knew a Marine stationed there with the grunts guarding the compound. Iceland and Greenland were names given by the Vikings which is ironic because Iceland is not all covered by Ice such as the name implies whereas Greenland is covered by a big ice sheet and there is hardly any greenery at all. Some believe the name was purposely given to thwart newcomers to their actual new habitats in Iceland. I did fly over Greenland on my way from EWR to PEK. (Polar route)
