Just returned from 48 hr layover w/boss

Great tour day:
we started at Hilton Old Town, walked 2 blocks, got # 8 tram, 3rd stop is Malostrankse across the river.
Using the SAME ticket (26ckz=$1.50)
Transfer to tram # 22 (right side of street) and go 3 stops (just past the funicular stop)
Turn around and go up to funicular tram. Using the SAME ticket which is good for an hour, take the funicular UP to Petrin Park. You can stop halfway at House Nebozizek Hotel Restaurant but bear in mind the timing in case the conductor won't take you up the last half.
Follow the path to the right to Observation Tower (100czk=5 bucks for tower admission which includes the lift which has never worked when we've been there!!) too mnay steps for me but a daunting walk for many. Reward is the great views and killer exercise!!
When you leave the area, head toward the spires and castle (to the right) on gravel path or paved route.
You can stop at the museums/monastery etc or keep workig your way into the Castle District, down the hill to the castle and cathedral.
NOW--here's the deal: buy a ticket for all the stuff to see (inside castle, galleries, Golden Lane, Tower and St Gerge etc)
part of the stuff (they have a list/map) to see or
IF you want to wander around the grounds and go into the cathedral (a MUST in my book!!) you pay for NO ticket!! Don't let the box office trick you into a ticket if you just want to see St Vitus.
St Vitus has some of the BEST stained glass and amazing Gothic arches!! It's so breath-taking!
Go all around the bldg, down to the castle walls and around thru the gardens or along the steps. If yoiu take the steps, youre back to the Malostranske tram stop--or go up tot he right, stop at ST Nicholas Sq--that church is GORJUS!! Rose marble, pastel frescoes to rival many in Europe!! $3.50 entry fee. Stop at Jo's for a drink, or head up Nerudova Street and stop at # 10--there's a little bar tucked in past the apt entry. MAGIC!!
You can walk back down, catch a tram back to your hotel or
continue to cross the Charles Bridge and stop for a beer or sausage or both or wine and ham and horseradish or a giant weenie!!
Then go to the Old Town Square or wherever far your tired legs will take you...
It's a great LONG walk--about 4 hours w/short stops or 5+ back to Old Town.
PS--if you can't handle the return walk, you'l need another tram ticket (or buy a multi-day pass if you will use it enuff)
Enjoy Prague!!
