Here's something that should be a good help for ya. FI is actually really cool about sharing loads if you know how to reach them. And even that's not hard. Send them an email at frim@icelandair.is (not .com). They will give you actual numbers like you'd expect to get around here - both open seats and number of standbys. When I do that, I generally get a response around 3:00AM Mountain time that morning, which I assume is opening of business out in Iceland.
Obviously, this may not be needed in your case, if you're taking DL. However, here's one other little trick: that response I got was from Icelandair, but the "name" was some really long strange Icelandic word. I plugged that into Google Translate to see what it meant. Tourism. Icelandair is huge on promoting tourism in Iceland, with the free stopovers enroute for paying pax. I'm sure if you want to email them a few questions, probably specific where possible, and maybe throw in a load check just in case you need a backup, they'd be happy to help!
