    Default looking for Iceland suggestions

We are going to Iceland in the fall for 5 days. Has anyone been there? If so, do you have a recommendation for the best areas to stay and a few memorable, must do experiences?

A Phoenician going to Iceland, Donna you do know you’ll need a jacket? As I recall Vulindlela has been there, you can drop him a line.

I have not been, but I'd like to!

For what it's worth, DL is opening a MSP-KEF route this summer in addition to their JFK-KEF route. But if you want to fly Icelandair, they're actually extremely helpful to nonrevs. Send an email to frim (at) icelandair .is and they'll help you out with load information as needed.

We are flying Icelander - we used miles. This is a stopover on the way to Paris. I love Alaska miles!

Yeah, we went about a year ago.
    Liked it a lot!
We hired a car and went into Reykjavik for a little bit, then drove the Golden Circle, and down to the southern coast near Vik.
You will see all the highlights on those routes, including Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Geysir, Kerid Crater, and the black sand beach in Vik.
We did not go, but this park is supposed to be nice as well: Thingvellir. It is close to all the other places.
It was simple to drive over there, and often we went awhile without seeing any other cars. The roads are well maintained, but there are a lot of dirt roads too.
It is mandatory to buy volcano ash insurance for the car hire. To fuel our compact car, it was about $70.

We did not do the Blue Lagoon. I would like to do that in the future. However for this trip, we were short on time, and wanted to focus on nature. Blue Lagoon is man made, and is considered a big tourist trap.

This is where we stayed and it was a nice hotel: Hotel Hafnarfjordur a family apartment hotel in Reykjavik / Hotel Hafnarfjordur

I see you are going in the fall, so you should be ok by then, but be advised that Iceland is experiencing a huge influx of tourism, and they do not expect to have enough hotels to meet that demand.

Thank you! We have been looking into staying in a small cottage about 2 hours outside of Reykjavik for several days but have been going back and forth over how much isolation we want. I have been reading about the Blue Lagoon and the fact that there are a lot of people was one of the biggest drawbacks. How long did it take you to drive the Golden Circle?

I would say 5-6 hours, with a lot of stopping, and at a leisurely pace.

We are considering this as well. Have you fund any place for information?

I followed the link above and got a lot of info. We did rent the house in the middle of nowhere and can't wait to go. Decided we are definitely going to the Blue Lagoon because, hey, you can't really go that far and not go to the most famous tourist area, right? Now to get my international driver's license - something I didn't need for last year's trip.

i'll post a trip report when we get back at the end of September.

Are they telling you that you need an international drivers license?

I did not need that when I drove there.
