Hi, Good to see a United friend here. I worked with UAL for 36 years retiring in 2003. Now we are really traveling and now th gandkids are usiing companion passes. It wold be wonderful if we could question you at times!!

I have a question now. What are the ZED fares? I did use then a couple years ago, but I am a little wary on traveling in Europe, even with Star Alliance and that is even confusing. We just got back fron Italy goiing through Milan (Malpensa) and Frankfort. We did full fares has we had many hotel reservations. I am sure we could have saved some money by using ZED but I relly do not know how to pull up their loads, etc.

See, already I have questions!!! Thank you, Judy Estey UAL

It is Zonal Employee Discount the price (which went up oct 1st) is calculated by miles/zone, all the details are in your employee website.

It is cheaper than ID90 they have a child fare and the fuel surcharge does not apply.
The wonderful thing with a ZED ticket is the flexibility any ticket issued one one carrier can be used on an other one who have the same agreement as long it's the same zone.
    Exemple
If you have a ticket LAX/CDG on AF you can use it on TN as long as they are on the list of the ZED carriers of your airline.
FYI I have heard some bad stories in Asia where the gate agents would not accept tickets issued on other ZED carriers than theirs in this case it is always good to print all the reference information to show them or have the agent who issue your ticket to put "valid on carrier XX" on the endorsement box
I had that done on a ticket issued on JL, we also have an agreement with NH it saved us when we tried to go from SGN to NRT.

That is so ggod to know. So in Europe, if we have a ZED on 1 airline it would be good to keep a list of all the other carriers who honor ZED. I know we can go on Skynet and bring up the carriers.

Do you know if UAL is coming out with any new things on companion passes. I usesd to just not use them but now my new husbands grandchildren and my cousins are getting to the age that they love them. Are the conpanion passes good on our Star Alliance?

Thank you so much for answering questions!!!

Companion passes are only good on UA. At the moment no changes to the companion pass charges, but it is "under review." My guess, which is out of thin air, mind you, is that they will change buddy passes to match ZED fares, but with no discount like employees/eligibles get. They will probably still charge for them in coach, also unlike the employees/eligibles.
