I recently flew from DAY to Newark and then from Newark to SLC (roundtrip) on a Continental Airline's buddy pass.
My friend came back and told me after the trip that I owed her $200.
Now I know buddy passes aren't entirely free, but is she taking advantage of me by overcharging me?
Concerned that I am being ripped off

can you fly that same route for less on a confirmed ticket?

I agree with mrs767er...buddy passes can be more than you think sometimes. Most airlines price them based on milage between cities flown and then are required by US tax law to add normal taxes which may appear to me more than usual because some taxes are built into traditional fares and they aren't on buddy passes. I looked up what the same trip would have been on DL and it would have been as follows:

    DAY-EWR-SLC-EWR-DAY
    FARE BASIS: BUDDY/Adult
    Base USD 160.93
    Taxes USD 42.07
    TOTAL USD 203.00

Looks like you saved 3 bucks by going CO!!

Sounds about right - Buddy Passes for long trips are not the big bargain they used to be...I recently had a friend fly on a Buddy Pass round trip FLL-LAS and it cost him $200...had he just purchased a 21day advance purchase confirmed ticket it would have cost him about $230...he had been planning the trip for a few months so an advance purchase ticket was not out of the question for him...but he wanted the chance for first class, which he didnt get - but instead got a middle seat in coach both directions...

Ouch and ICK--middle seats? Well, for a popular destination, right? Next time tell him to pick someplace weird--he'll prpobably get business elite, even if it isn't where he wants to go!! hahaha
Buddy passes have their place for certain types of travel. The only real bargains are when you go overseas and get babied in BE--$400 isn't much to spend 8-10 hours x 2, is it?

Next time you do this, give him/her your credit card number so that the airlines bills you. Saves them the hassle of having to chase you down for the 200 bucks. Anyone wanting to do a buddy pass from me WILL have a credit card to put the bill on. Yes. 200 bucks is a chunk a change for something called a "BUDDY PASS". I think they should change this "BUDDY PASS" name to something else. Just because it reads "BUDDY" on the pass, you can end up making "ENEMIES" over this "BUDDY PASS". 9 times out of ten is because of monies due.

I've NEVER had a problem with "Friends & Family" passes....because only "Friends & Family" use them. Simple solution..

Thanks for the info and advice. You are all right, my lady friend did me a favor by allowing me to use her pass and I am grateful for the flight.
I guess I was mislead by the terminology of the pass. I figured that the buddy pass would be free, never would have guessed that it would cost so much to give away a free flight...
I would have paid around $430 had I purchased the ticket myself, so I did get off cheaper.

I think dinner and a movie are in store for my freind along with the $200.

Thanks again for wisen me up.
