Hey everyone. Because of certain agreements between my airline and others, for an upcoming trip to SYD that my mother would like to take, I suggested LAN.

LA flies SCLSYD, but it stops in AKL. So, when purchasing the coupon, do I purchase SCLSYD or SCLAKL and AKLSYD?

I don't think LA carries any local pax on the AKLSYD leg, so I don't really think it would be necessary, but I just wanted to see what everyone thinks. I've taken thru flights before, but only on my own airline, which is all electronic, and have only listed to the final, but was cleared at the first point. Of course, one time I was bumped due to an oversale, but if they're only letting pax deplane and none will be boarding, I don't really see how that could happen for any reason than a weight restriction or something of the like.

    Thanks in advance!

Most airlines would recommend that you get seperate coupons. This shouldn't cost more (i'm pretty sure) and would be in your best interest. If you are good they will pull both, if you get stuck then at least you aren't left with nothing!

I know QF always recommend that one gets a MEL-AKL and AKL-LAX coupon on their service that transits AKL (if i had the desire to try the AKL transit flight rather than direct... which i certainly don't!) rather than the MEL-LAX coupon.

I know at CX we recommend everyone gets a HKG-ADL and ADL-MEL ticket if planning to catch our transit flight (CX105). In reality there is a a 99.99% guarantee you would not get bumped in ADL - but they still recommend it.

It's always that 00.1% that gets you in trouble. I know, I download iTunes.

Based on the title of the question, you should be aware that ZED is a point to point pricing system. It is probably a good idea to get that extra coupon but it will likely cost you extra.

Actually the transporting carrier must state in its agreements that it requires separate coupons be priced and issued for each nonstop segments. Most US carriers require that but many non-US carriers do not, unless the segment exeeds 9000 miles. If LA does not have traffic rights between AKL-SYD, they may not require, nor may the the ticketing carrier be able to issue, separate coupons. You should consult with your staff travel office before having the ticket issued. They should have more specific information regarding your agreement with LA. Also, be sure it is LA operating the flight. I know LA has a codeshare with QF in this market (operated by QF).

I priced it out today, and SCLSYD is $25 less than the two coupons of SCLAKL and AKLSYD. The $25 isn't a terrible amount to pay though, to help the cause of getting to the final destination! Thru flights are so hard for ticketing, especially OAL ZEDs. Half the time I don't even know where the flight stops!

And thanks for warning me about the QF codeshare. I did some research and found that LA codeshares with QF on EZESYD, but not on SCLSYD.

I think I will call up my pass travel desk to ask about the stopover.

But, now that my mother is rethinking all of this, who knows if any of this will come to pass. She's exec plat on AA, and doesn't know if she could live without an upgrade all the way to SYD if she, in fact, nonrevs. I think she's flown nonrev maybe twice in the past two years, both times on 45 minute flights!

Setting zed tickets is a part of my job. It HAS to be done segment by segment.
Any stop will count through flight included (even for refueling ex LH FRA/ADD. they stop to refuel at KRT according to the rule you would need to get FRA/KRT/ADD).
