Hi,
I am about to leave for my trip to Fiji and Australia and have a question about my return. I am not sure what the loads are going to look like at the end of the month(Co out of cns but only flies 2 times a week) so I am going to buy a back up zed ticket for my way home. I am planning on leaving out of Bne since that is where I am staying most of the time but if need will fly down to syd if the loads are better . Since the zed fare will be the top milage will it matter if it is listed bne to lax if I fly out of syd??? I have changed zed fares before if it is the same miles but it was a few years ago..... I am just having a hard time deciding if I need to buy a bunch of zed fares with the citys I can leave from even though they are in the same mile zones...... any ideas????? Thanks

I'm assuming the backup is on QF?

It shouldn't matter, they usually co-rate revenue passengers on BNE-LAX, MEL-LAX and SYD-LAX as the distance as almost the same - so it should be no different with a ZED. I have known people who have won MEL-LAX tickets and they have let them use them SYD-SFO.

To be sure call their staff travel office (they prefer if you call on a weekday rather than weekend):
Brisbane 07-3238-7920 (011-617-3238-7920 if calling from USA)
Sydney 02-8303-4444 (011-612-8303-4444 if calling from USA)

You can call the US number (800-227-4500) but they are contract staff and won't be very helpful.

It will not matter if the CSA knows what they are doing and I have done it several times.
If you encounter trouble, kindly ask for a Supervisor.

Generally you will not have too much trouble using a BNE/SYD/MEL to LAX coupon from any of these ports, provided you have re-listed for the appropriate flight. In the event the check-in agent will not accept the coupon, just go see the Ticket Sales desk, who will usually revalidate it with a sticker for that route.

Just remember that technically the answer is "no, you cant use a BNE-LAX coupon for SYD-LAX". However, the rules dont always match real world experience.

The ZED tickets are mileage based if it is the same zone it should be accepted. In some cases the tax need to be recalculated and it can become an agent decision.
If let's say you have a ticket for a zone 9 and want to use it for zone 8 it should be accepted but you will not get any refund.
The airpiort agent can be contractors and not real airline employees in some airport they might not know the "subtility" of ZED tickets.
I always carry a print out of the rules to show if needed.

ZEDMIBA doesn't really publish the rules. They publish the agreement to which all ZED carriers are a party. It is then up the each employing carrier to communicate that to its own employees. At AA the ZED agreement conditions are edited and published on our employee intranet. Other airlines publish bullets/highlights through their internal websites and/or other publications. I would recommend contacting your staff trave office in HKG to obtain that information.
