I have been upgraded on Air France. Last summer was flying CDG-JFK. Wife got last seat on first flight. I got bumped 4 times....waited about 10 hours (no big deal..easy to pass time at CDG) and when I finally got on....they put me in business class for my 7-hour flight. Wow....well worth the wait. Toasted champagne before takeoff and was on my 3rd wine before leaving the European Union. Just remember...dress for it. If you don't look like you belong in 1st class....they are not likely to put you there.
