    Default vaccines for overseas travel

I am looking at making some trips this year, beginning with Cambodia in a couple of weeks. I have been wondering if people going overseas get vaccines. I have looked at the CDC website for needed or recommended vaccines. I have contacted my companies travel center with the question, I have posted in the company forums also.

It seems to me that most people do not worry about them. I should have asked the question here sooner as I am heading to a travel clinic in a couple of hours to see what is recommended for the travels I want to make. And get any that I might need.

So, what are your opinions for overseas travel vaccines.

    Thanks, Tony

Most airlines use a system called Timatic, which has information for requirements to get into a country, as well as recommended (or required) vaccines. Delta has a page that relays that information for you, Visa & Passport Information

Before I went to Spain for a semester, I had to get a check-up. The nurse recommended that I get a Hepatitis A vaccine for food-borne illnesses, though I never did do that. In a country like Cambodia, I would give that a little more thought, though.

I would call your local health department if your personal physician cannot give you a recommendation of what you need /where to get shots.
Most will recommend HEP A/B, update tetanus, certain countries require yellow fever card (some say they demand it if you have stopover in YF destination) I have never had to present my card, however, I would not wish to NOT have it. I am getting my final HEP boosters in a few wks. We do not travel to malarial zones except cool seasons but dengue fever could be worse than in non-malarial areas.
    Just some thoughts.

Haha I think my bathroom is a dengue fever breeding zone... it's a wet room outside in an air well (1940s war home) so cannot stop them

So, I called our travel center to see if they knew places to get vaccines, they mentioned to contact the health department and check the Delta website visa information section. The visa information section did not show any needed/recommended vaccines (at least where I looked).I then called my primary care office and they said to try a travel clinic as they might not have the needed vaccines. So, checked the health department website and there is a link to travel clinics. So I called the one at St. Marks and they had an opening the following day. After I called them I called our insurance provider to find out if the clinic was covered by them. I ended up finding out that the doctor I was going to visit was listed as one who took our insurance, crossing my fingers now that some of the cost will be covered. Oh, I also checked Walgreens and they said they only offered flu vaccines. The doctor recommended that I get the Hep A shots, Typhoid (I got the oral type), malaria and travelers diarrhea. His thoughts were the Heb b was not really needed-it is transferred similar to aids and we figured I was not at high risk. Rabies also came up and just suggested that I stay away from dogs (dog rabies are up in Cambodia). So, I have the 1st of 2 Hep A shots, next one in 6 months. It looks like the typhoid lasts 5 years (the injection type lasts 2 years). Not quite sure how long the malaria pills last.A quick look on the CDC website shows very similar recommendations for the places I want to travel to (Vietnam, South Africa, and Dubai). South America and Africa also have yellow fever down for being recommended with some countries not allowing travel without the proof of yellow fever vaccine. So, I would check with your primary care to see if they offer the recommended vaccines that are shown on the CDC website, might save some money. I will post when I find out what is covered and was not covered. The doctor thought that the Hep A should be covered as it is now a routine vaccine that children get. He also thinks one of the malaria options is covered. I will check the list of covered prescriptions to see if any of them are listed.

    excellent info!
I got YF vaccine when it was not covered by insurance--now ALL my vaccinations are covered 100% w/no deductibles--just like any preventive care. I got the HEP A/B since they could be done in tandem and one never knows what to encounter in some places.
I have risk for using some of the malarial meds, so I have to be very cautious in that dept. If you get YF vacc it's good for 10yrs--I'd get it if it's covered or not (mine was $120 about 5 yrs ago) I plan to keep it updated.
