Default Zed fare use on actual travel date

My dad is going down to South America next week. He'll be traveling gypsy style without a solid plan to go from place to place. He's going to some places that Delta doesn't fly to and will be purchasing Zed fares before he gets there. But the question is, does it matter what the date is on the Zed fare? What if his plans change? Is it easy just to have it changed by the other airline?

There needn't be a specific date on the ticket... ZED tickets are valid for a certain period (3 months I think, but check this), so you're good for travel up to the exp date.

In fact, ZED tickets are particularly great if you're not on a fixed schedule: it gives you maximum flexibility at no additional cost whatsoever. If you want to fly out, just check if there's a seat, list and go. Can't be better than this, for a gypsy, can it? ;-)

ZED tickets are valid for 90 days and may be used on any flight, date regardless of what's shown on the ticket. The only absolute required match is the routing (on & off points). Theoretically, you can also use it on an airline other than the one shown on the ticket as long as you have a similar ZED agreement (e.g., same fare level) with the new intended airline. It is, however, common to get push back from some airlines if they, specifically, are not shown on the ticket (VALID ZED CARRIERS is intended to be sufficient endorsement, but some agents don't accept that).

Also, it is up to your own airline to reissue youticket. Do not expect an other airline to change your ticket or issue you a new one.

    A few tips:

Ask your airline not to mention a specific airline and flightnumber on the ticket in case the route is flown by several ZED carriers, that way the only endorsement on the ticket is 'valid all zed carriers' and nobody can refuse you because the ticket wasn't issued for them.

Also, although I know the route on the ticket should theoretically match the sector flown, it seems some airlines will also accept a ticket issued for a different route if the fare is the same or higher: LH for instance does it standard: never had a problem getting on a FRA flight with my MUC ticket, although I understand this not to be the norm.

FYI...I have been advised by the CO GSA that issues my ZED tickets they have to have a specific airline and date or the ticket issuing machine cannot generate the ticket.
That is for the first segment and then they just need an airline for every other segment...
    Cheers
