What are your plans in lake powell? Are you wanting to rent a houseboat? The best times to rent houseboats are just after the tourist season ends. Right now it is HOT down there. Once tourist season ends the houseboat rental costs drop. I would think going down in Sept, Oct would be a good time. There is not a lot to do if you are not renting a houseboat.
You need to decide what you want to do. I believe most houseboat rentals are from Bullfrog/Halls crossing marina's. I think you have more senic area's without as much travel (gas) from these marina's.
You could go to Page, Az. and do some slot canyon hiking, most need permits but you can day hike a few (buckskin gulch/wire pass).
If going to Page then st. george or Cedar City would be best but you would need to go through SLC. Going to Bullfrog/Halls crossing you might as well rent a car from SLC.
Look at the trip advisor forums, you should be able to find out more about what to do/where to go at Lake Powell.
Cool thanks. I saw a video of Lake Powell and I just knew I needed to bring the kids there. They are half fish like me and love the water. I love driving so wherever I got is cool if I have to drive. I know the last flight from SLC-MSP goes regardless of the load (ie. half full airplane) because Delta needs it first thing out of MSP. So getting back shouldn't be an issue. BTW, I still want to go to SMX for a weekend.
Offroader,
We were absolutely planning on renting a houseboat. Financially, next winter/ early spring would be our best bet. Thanks for the info I'm getting more and more excited everyday.
That's true for more flights than you realize. Maybe MSP-RAP will be wide open, but it's still early in the day and most people will be flying RAP-MSP to make a connection later on. Cancelling a flight due to too few people is VERY rare these days. At most, it might be used as a factor if they need to choose x number of flights to cancel due to weather/ATC or aircraft availability.
