Both of those are awesome, but I honestly don't think I can do either on a 4 day weekend.
Or can I?
Osaka or Tokyo, both are about the shortest trasnpacs out of SFO You can visit Kyoto and fly into Osaka.
I suppose you can do Seoul as well. Language might be an issue at all 3.

Transpac in 4 days? Half that trip will be sitting on a plane. From SFO, I'd say NRT. To go anywhere else, you may have to connect, adding less time to your trip right? Beijing requires a visa for about 100 bucks, too much hassle for so short of a time. I'm with Chepos here. Stick with Japan if only going for 4 days. Gives you about 2 solid days and a half maybe to see around the area. What about Alaska? Anchorage, rent a car and visit the Kenai peninsula. May be snowing about now.

I would say Hong Kong. You could spend two nights there. There is also a Cathay Pacific flight HKG to SFO if you can not get the United flight out.
I stayed at an IBIS hotel on Hong Kong Island but a little out of downtown, they offer airline rates. The subway is really easy to get around. See the nightly laser light show and head to the area where the night market is, that seems to be a good place for food and stuff to do.
Remember you lose a day going there but get a day coming back.

considering travel time, I agree with HKG. MTR Octopus card is righteous! laser show, ding ding trams, night market is a blast, as well as the bird market AND the cheap ferries!! ck previous posts on HKG here--hostels in Kowloon, YMCA for fairly cheap digs. Cheap food to be had, too. Just watch out for major event/hoilday stuff for loads.

Yeah I thought Hong Kong would be a nice first trip. The non-stops and those connecting flights through NRT and ORD that will have you arriving home before you left *wink*, plus as Offroader & M7 pointed out, the sights, the inexpensive food and hotels - not a bad way to go.
BTW - Tony you move to San Francisco and the Giants sweep the World Series--coincidence?

I've been there before (HK) and looove it. I'm just scared since I can't get ZED's fpr 6 months and I have no backup. UA's HKG flights are always packed. But I might just give it a shot if I can get someone to standby to cover for me in case I don't get back.
