Default Do not challenge a UA Flight Attendant. But I didn't ....?

On a United Airlines flight from Zurich to Washington Dulles International Airport on Jan 2, Bill Pollock asked a flight attendant about a sign telling passengers not to venture beyond the curtain separating economy class from the rest of the plane. Pollock, a book publisher from Burlingame, California, said he wanted to stretch his legs and visit his wife seated on the opposite aisle, using the passageway behind the galleys in the plane’s midsection.
But when he questioned a flight attendant on the policy and began recording their conversation using his cellphone, the situation quickly escalated: The flight attendant grabbed his phone and nearby federal air marshals intervened.
“Two marshals held me up against the counter, they had my hands behind my back,” Pollock said. “I wasn’t violent, I didn’t use four-letter words. All I did was ask this guy about the sign on the curtain and they flipped out.”
The flight was met by United personnel and security agents, who, Pollock said, took his statement and then sent him on his way. But the incident left him with lingering questions about his rights — like whether there is a policy restricting economy-class passengers to their own cabin (not just their own bathrooms), whether travelers are prohibited from videotaping flight crew and what recourse passengers have if airline or security personnel overreact.
It turns out, none of these questions has a clear answer.
Les Dorr, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the agency did not have a rule limiting passenger movement on a plane, but federal regulations state, “No person may assault, threaten, intimidate or interfere with a crew member in the performance of the crew member’s duties aboard an aircraft.”

There are two sides to the story. I think the issue came with him starting to record things. Not sure why you would do that, but I can see where an FA may feel intimidated by that. Not saying this guy is 100% in the wrong, mind you, but I don't think we're getting all the details here, either.

Also, if I were paying the thousands of dollars for a F or C ticket, I wouldn't want the whole plane wandering in, personally.

I would be very interested in what the conversation was like BEFORE he started to record it and how it went AFTER. Why bother to record anything (which is illegal in some states without the express permission of both parties) unless you are trying to do something you think might get you in trouble?

i suspect there is much more to this story.

Recording in the air? Which state rules about recording apply in the clouds? But there is kind of a lost rights for passengers on board the flights. They can virtually tell you any rule and you have to follow wheather its rule or not. How can you argue with a crew member right or wrong? You will lose. Again, you have no rights once you get on the airplane. They can talk down to you but you can't talk down to them. And you will get no mercy from anyone. They will believe and follow the flight attendants over the passenger any day and so will the law.

All the lady had to do was shut up and not answer the guy or just say, "I don't know". Or "Please don't record me". I tell you what. The more I think about this, the more I hate cell phones for that matter. He's lucky he didn't get the cell phone shoved up where the light don't shine.

I mean, really like if someone ask me about a maintenance issue and suddenly puts a cell phone in front of my lips to start to record what I have to say about maintenance, I will make sure that cell phone finds a rendevouz with this rude idiots ass and will need surgery to have it removed!!! It'll be even funnier as I make calls in the middle surgery.

Palms, living in Houston, you should know that the act you describe is called a "Texas Chili Bowl".......the only thing missing is you cover the cellphone in Tabasco first..
