AA to expand self serve check in and bag tagging
American Airlines has continued its expansion of self-service checked bag tagging, adding the do-it-yourself process at DCA Airport yesterday.
American initially tested the service last year in AUS, where passengers were able to speed up check-in times by as much as 55 percent by using the machines, according to a company spokesman. Self service checked bag tagging is new for AA. Air Canada rolled out this process in YYZ and YUL over a year ago.
AS has been testing this for a few months (in certain markets) and it seems to be quite popular. I worry about front line jobs with all of this "do it yourself" technology but the public likes it.

Those frontline positions will always be there, even if a few less than now. I'll admit I haven't seen this setup in action, but the bags still have to be weighed to get those overweight charges (not to mention FAA regulations), people have to have their ID checked, and flights occasionally rebooked during delays and such.
