I'd plan on 2 nts in VCE to be safe.
I found this from 2011:
Take the bus service 15 from the Airport to the Venezia Mestre train station.

From Venezia Mestre regional trains take less than 2 hours to Trieste. The fare for the trains departing at 09:23; 10:00; 12:23; 13:23; 14:23; 15:23; 16:23; 17:23; 18:23; 19:54; 23:12 is €9.70. Other trains are available at higher fares between €13.00 and €18.50.
