I figure it's a less busy travel day so chances might be better. What are your experiences?

Yes, and success depends a lot on where you’re traveling (having alternate airport/s + a willingness to “hopscotch” to your destination improves your odds), the WEATHER and getting up early - that first flight out, as always, is a very good idea.
Good Luck

I actually non revved the Saturday after Thanksgiving a few years ago. Took the first flight out and it was probably 1/3 empty. I would say that your best bet is going to be - as Mig said - early morning and make sure you watch those loads carefully. At this time of the year, the load can change in an instant with bad weather and folks making same day changes.

Day before Thanksgiving
2 airports, 4 gates, 1 freeway and I got as far as the first rung of the mobile stairs.
Thanksgiving Day
Missed the first half of the game, but was in plenty of time for dinner.
