California-based Avelo Airlines, which recently started operations on the US west coast, has said Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN) in Connecticut will be its first East Coast base.
Avelo has committed $1.2 million towards an ambitious $100 million capital-improvement plan for HVN, unveiled by the airport and its manager, Avports.
Located about 60 mi. south of Hartford’s Bradley International Airport (BDL) and 80 mi. northeast of New York’s LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy (JFK) airports, HVN aligns with Avelo’s plan to serve smaller, secondary airports that offer an alternative to larger, established hubs.
“Tweed New Haven has enormous potential, and our first east coast base is great news for Avelo, New Haven, East Haven and other local [Connecticut] communities,” said Avelo CEO Andrew Levy, formerly United Airlines CFO and Allegiant Air president.
Avelo launched flights out of Burbank Airport (BUR), near Los Angeles, last month. Its current route map covers 10 cities, all in the western US.
