Lightbulb Non Revving and Secondary Airports

As non-revs we know that sometimes best laid plans go astray - plans A, B, C and D get shredded and the writing on the wall becomes crystal clear -
You won't be flying out of this airport today and probably not tomorrow either!
This is where secondary airports shine, they offer you another bite of the apple - a way to keep your promise to "be there" (at their graduation) and another way to get home.
Secondary airports - a contingency plan to keep in your back pocket

Los Angeles (LAX) has four secondary airports

    Hollywood Burbank/BUR - Drive time - 45 minutes
    John Wayne/SNA - Drive time - 50/90 minutes
    Long Beach/LGB - Drive time - 30/45 minutes
    Ontario/ONT -Drive time - 90 minutes /2 hours

LGB is my back pocket airport
Airlines operating out of LGB are DL HA and SW.
Unfortunately AA is terminating it's operations out of LGB Feb. 28, but on the bright side, HA & SW are still flying out of LGB and both have at least one direct flight to HNL every day, which I have found to be very handy.

Just a note about Palm Springs (PSP) I don't recommend it because of the ground transportation costs, however if you're going to spend a few days in Palm Springs vacationing, or attending Coachella, it's a option.

It should be noted that LA drive times depend a lot on time of day (morning rush hour 6am to 10am and evening rush hour 3pm to 7pm.) Also you should know that for some unknown reason at least one truck jack-knifes on the 405 every day and that Angelenos can't drive in the rain.

Funny story I was on a LAX bound flight when the Captain announced we would be diverting to Ontario and would be bussed to LAX - a pax yelled out
"Canada? We're going to Canada, can't you find any place closer... like San Francisco?"
His question was met with laughter and a big round of applause.

    Great tips.

For the NYC area, JFK, LGA and EWR.
Secondary airports to consider are ISP and HPN.
Other options to consider are to either fly or take ground transportation to/from PHL, BOS or DCA/BWI/IAD. One of the more roundabout ways to get to Sarasota (SRQ) over the summer was LGA-BOS-PHL-SRQ. A bit further away, I once wish I had my passport with me as a flight to YYZ was wide open while everything else was red.

Do these options have tolls? I only ask because I'm pretty use to FREEways!

No toll to ISP from LGA/JFK but yes to HPN as well as the DC area airports, BOS and PHL. However, bus and Amtrak are options. Watch out, we don’t have 8-10 lane highways. 3 to maybe 4 is more common in these parts. However, gas does tend to be “cheaper” than in the place where it doesn’t rain much!

ONT is the second fastest growing airport in the country besides AUS and #3 PSP. Why? Inland Empire traffic, Asian growth demand. China Air has a nonstop.

Another one that we used recently is SBA. We did SBA-SMF which was my 500th WN flight!
We were visiting friends in Ventura and the thought of going back to LAX with all that traffic and construction was awful.
Not sure if you still can, but I flew LAX-PSP and LAX-SNA many times.
I was stuck in SNA once with a mechanical so I hopped on the Skywest Brasilia to LAX and made it to my destination of AUS via WN.

For my home airport of IND, I would consider and have even used the following secondary airports:
    SBN
    FWA
    EVV
    ORD
    MDW
    SDF
    LEX
    BMI
    DAY
    CVG
    CMH
