Hi Carl, you are just the person I need to ask about SF, I will be traveling the end of October, I will fly into Oakland, how will I get to Chinatown from the airport? I am trying to find a decent hotel also, plz let me know if you recommend any, I also want to go visit Nappa Valley is it far from Chinatown? Is there a train that will take us to see more of SF? Please forgive me for being so naive, I have wanted to travel to SF for many, many years. so many places to visit and so little time. I want to thank you for your expertise in this matter.Lisa from Tampa.

Flying into Oakland, take the red, blue and orange AIRBART bus to the Oakland Coliseum BART Station. Cost is $2.00 Hop a SF/Daly City Train to the Montgomery Station. Chinatown is a short distance away. The Renaissance Stanford Court Hotel is only one block away. That is the closest hotel however not the cheapest. give me some time and i will look y something with an airline discount. There are no trains to Napa Valley, best idea would be car rental, depending on where in the Napa Valley you are headed determines how long it will take. Dozens of great wineries. Try the V. Sattui winery. It's an old style grocery and park like setting perfect for a picnic or gathering supplies for travelling deep into the heart of the Napa/Sonoma Wine Country. If you are a movie buff try the Coppola Niebaum Winery, proprieted by Francis Ford Coppola, Great wine, atmosphere and Hand Rolled Cigars. Another option would be to hire a limousine, they take you to most of the wineries in the area and are your designated driver in case you get a little saturated. Test running of the trains began in august yielding positive results. BART is currently working on a fare structure for the extension. Possibly a slight increase in ticket cost, around 25-30 cents. Regular scheduled service to SFO is slated to begin in Jan or Feb of 2003 I can't quite remember offhand. But the station is located in the brand new absolutely beautiful international terminal. Easy access to the North and South terminals.

You can take either public transit or a shuttle to fishermans wharf. Public Transit is much less expensive. When you arrive in OAK, proceed to the front of the terminal and cross the first street to a bluish reddish orange colored awning with the words AirBART written on it. Buy a $2.00 ticket from the macheine there, and wait for the AirBART bus. This will take you to the Oakland Coliseum BART station. After you purchase your train ticket, proceed up the escalator to the platform, stay on the right side and wait for a train that says SF/Daly City. Get onboard and take it all the way to the first stop after entering the Transbay Tube, Embarcadero Station. Exit the station and walk toward Pier 1 Customs Facility and Port of San Francisco Office, denoted by a tall spire with lights. Cross street and turn left. There are a number of busses and taxis that will take you to Fishermans Wharf or the walk is approximately 1.1 miles along the water.

I would say take BART from the airport but once again there is another delay in the progress. You can still take BART though, but it will not be directly from the airport. Go to the lower level baggage claim area, and look for the SAMTRANS bus stop. Wait for the BX route bus. cost is 1.25 at last check, the bus will round the airport terminal and then head to the United Airlines Maintainence Hangar. After it leaves the hangar, it will enter the freeway and take you to the Colma BART station. Buy your train ticket from the automated machine, and catch any train leaving the station. For now Colma is the end of the line station. Two options, take the train to the Powell Street station, here you will be in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Buy a $2 Cable Car ticket and take it all the way to the end of the line. 2nd option, take the train all the way to Embarcadero station, this is the cruise ship terminal and customs facility, it is also close to Pac Bell Park. Take a street car or walk or taxi, the 1.1 miles to Fishermans wharf. Nice walk along the waterfront, right at the footsteps of the financial district and the sky scrapers of the city. Caution, do not travel past Embarcadero station otherwise, you will enter the Transbay Tube and end up across the bay in Oakland. Have fun.

Thanks, Carl! You just answered every question I had about getting from the airport to the wharf. I am taking a cruise out of San Francisco in a month and didn't want to take a taxi from the airport if I could help it.

Carl, I posted a message in another line asking for info about 49ers tickets but I thought I would ask here and see what you know about them.

I looked online and saw that they are selling them for about $58.00 each but was hoping that someone could get a better deal.

Any help would be great !! I am looking for 3 tickets to the 49ers vs steelers Nov 17th game.
Thanks,
